my dysfunctional relationship with reality tv.

i would say that about 75% of the tv i watch is reality tv.  and they’re not shows like the kardashians or the hills (wait, is that classified as reality tv?) or real housewives of orange county where you just follow lame people around living in their rich and fabulous lives.  i like the shows where they find random people who are really good at something (or are TRYING to be good at something), make them compete to prove who is the best and then little by little find the diamond in the rough.  shows like american idol, make me a supermodel, project runway, top chef, biggest loser, SYTYCD, etc.

it becomes a dysfunctional relationship when i submerge myself into these people’s lives and really start pulling for them and i’m crushed when they get voted off.  many years ago (2004), i got sucked into watching the bachlorette with meredith (the girl from portland).  there was one guy (matthew) who was perfect for her and we all thought that she would pick him.  and then out of nowhere, she picks the other guy (ian).  i cried.  i freaked out.  i was devastated.  like i watched a good friend totally ruin their life in front of my eyes.  the sad thing is, the show was filmed and edited for that reason – to fool you!  to make you think one thing and then totally turn it on you!  and i didn’t like that, so i stopped watching.

last night on SYTYCD, my favorite girl contestant, janette, got sent home.  and it was semi-earth shattering.  i’m so sad.  my love for the show this season just got crushed.  i’ll still watch it, but i’m mad.  so i’ll probably give it the cold shoulder for the rest of the season and not talk about it on facebook or reschedule social events around it.  huff.
