“When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” ~G.K. Chesterton

have you ever really stopped to think that all things in life, good or bad, happen for a reason and not just by chance?  how often are we grateful for the hardships in life?  do you think maybe we experience hardships not just to grow our character but to make us really appreciate the times that are good?  do you think that hardships are a blessing in disguise?  maybe to remember that life’s too short to get so caught up in the little things?

i have been so encouraged by my sister this week.  i spoke with her briefly on the phone yesterday and even despite the pain and suffering, she still asks me “how are you?  what’s new with you guys?” or when i ask her how she’s feeling she says “i’m okay… it could be a lot worse”.  people say things like that in passing, but not after they’ve been in the hospital for the past 3 days with their back sliced open – so for her to say those things i could tell she really meant it.  despite being at her worst, she reflects being a woman of character and continues to be a blessing to others with what she’s capable of doing even if it’s just a phone call.  she’s amazing!

the most recent update from my parents (and this is a paraphrase of an email that they sent out):  ashley has finally been weened off of oxygen and was able to eat some lemon sorbet yesterday.  today they are trying to ween her off of the IV of pain medication to see if they can regulate the pain with oral medication – this will help her not be so loopy.  the goal today is to see if she can stand up and with the help of a walker make it to the sink in her room.

please continue to keep her in your prayers – this experience has not only been hard on ash, but is emotionally very difficult for her husband and my parents.  pray that her body responds positively to the oral pain medication and that she might be able to take a few steps today – that would be MAJOR progress!

  • You’re right… it is inspirational. Love the picture and quote, too. Praying for less “loopiness”, less pain and some steps today. Go Ashley!
