so if any of you know me well enough you know that when it comes to music i’m a little behind or perhaps even unappreciative – not on purpose, i promise. i will listen to the same songs OVER and OVER again. whenever matt and i are in the car and he asks me to pick music, i usually pick the same 5 albums – it drives him crazy. here’s a typical scenario when in the car with matt: i say “oh! i know this song! i like this song!” to which matt says, “okay…who’s the artist?” heck if i know! who even cares? and then i proceed to go through my mental iPod artist list of EVERY artist i can think of and 9 times of of 10 i can’t get it. ask me to name the title of the song and i’m screwed.
you see… matt understands the beauty behind the music. every artist has something unique in their voice or there’s something particular in the music that he recognizes immediately. so if he hears a song for the first time on a commerical or in a store, he can 9 times out of 10 say “oh! this is so-and-so. this is a sweet new song!” how in the world did he guess that?? um… yeah… we’re SO not on the same wavelength. matt’s iPhone has like 200 different artists. mine has like 10.
so… i pick my music solely off of whether or not i understand the words and if it catches my attention – which means that my choice songs typically resemble the radio’s “top 7 at 7″ or the like. if i can’t understand the words i get annoyed and if it’s too slow i get bored and if it involves any sort of screaming it stresses me out. so i typically stick to bands like death cab, coldplay, one republic, etc. but my shining moment is when i hear a song on the radio, or so you think you can dance and i say “hey matt… have you ever heard of this song??” and he’s like “no” and i say “you should listen to it… you’d like it” and he listens to it and he DOES like it! so here are a few of them and i’ve since added them to my iPod under the “october” album for my nike+ (note: not all of these songs did i discover first, but i liked them and downloaded them):
1. “all over you”, the spill canvas
2. “forever”, chris brown (the dance that twitch and comfort did last season on SYTYCD)
3. “human”, the killers
4. “don’t stop the music”, rihanna
